HOUSE WITH TWO ROOFS

004-archaos-00

The project is situated within the historic rural fabric of the Duboka area on the island of Vis, amidst a dense arrangement of traditional stone houses and narrow streets. It is a small family weekend house designed in harmony with the typology, scale, and atmosphere of the historic environment.

The starting point of the project was an existing garden enclosed by stone hedges—a kind of intimate stone base from which the concept of the house emerged. This stone foundation has been retained, accommodating the new volume while respecting the existing structure and memory of the place. The house is positioned along a stone wall by the street, freeing the opposite side of the plot for a garden and outdoor living area, while simultaneously ensuring the necessary privacy by stepping away from the neighboring plot.

On the narrow and constrained plot, it was necessary to provide an optimal number of rooms without disrupting the harmonious rural pattern. This led to the elongated form of the house. To visually soften its length and harmonize the proportions with the surrounding two-pitched traditional houses, the elongated volume is “broken up” by a rhythmic sequence of two connected pitched roofs in a row, emphasizing a unique composition. The house thus retains a contemporary identity while respecting the scale and silhouette of traditional construction.

Regarding materiality and contextual adaptation, for reasons of economy, rustic concrete and plaster finishes were selected, with texture and tone carefully matched to establish visual continuity with the existing stone houses in the neighborhood.

The lower floor is conceived as a tavern with a sanitary facility — a space for gathering, barbecuing, and relaxing—directly connected to the outdoor terrace and pool, creating a continuous indoor-outdoor living environment typical of the Mediterranean lifestyle.

The upper floor is reserved for the private section of the weekend house, where simple and functional rooms are arranged: a bathroom and two bedrooms, each with direct access to the exterior courtyard. The kitchen is connected to the dining area and living room, which is centered around a fireplace as a gathering point and atmospheric element.

From the living area, a striking, almost hidden view opens toward the sea, discreetly emerging between two large hills. This controlled, “framed” view was one of the client’s key desires—a moment in which the landscape is revealed.

Through a contemporary intervention within the historic fabric, the house represents an example of architecture that contributes to the continuity of the place while offering contemporary functionality and comfort.
